West Grand Marais

Come along with us as we explore another portion of our fall studio tour - West Grand Marais. These three artist stops are located off side roads from County Road 7, which runs parallel to Highway 61. If you haven’t traveled it before, CR 7 offers some spectacular views above Lake Superior, as well as beautiful yellow poplar forests and bulging hills/cliffs of the Sawtooth Mountains. As you travel onto the dirt side roads to visit these artist studios, you’ll feel like you are a world away even though you are close to Grand Marais.

If you are coming from the west, you can stop at Cascade State Park before you head up County Road 7 (CR7). Or head up CR 7 and you can access the upper portion of Cascade State Park, multiple spots to hop on the Superior Hiking Trail, and beautiful Pike Lake.

Many people visit the CR7 stops just before or after lunch, so we’ve included a list of local eateries at the bottom. Make sure to double check their hours before you arrive.

4. Sharon & Steve Frykman | Frykman Art Studio 306 County Road 44, Grand Marais
frykmanart.com | 218-387-1949
Sharon and Steve's art is an exploration in glass, metal, wood and stone. Their studio houses large working spaces with forges and kilns, a gallery, and a sculpture garden overlooking a woodland meadow.

Guest Artist: Brittany Foster
bmfjewelry.com | @bmfjewelry
Handmade in Ely, Brittany’s work is inspired by the woods and the city. She creates unique jewelry with twisted wires, tiny saw work, and bright brass accents.

Guest Artist: Maxene Linehan
northshoreartistsleague.org | maxl@boreal.org
Maxene is an educator and abstract artist who specializes in color theory, painting, collage, and freeform woven paper. Living with nature in the north woods influences her art, directly and subconsciously.

Guest Artist: JD Jorgenson
maineprairiestudio.com | @jdjraejorgenson
JD lives in Kimball MN, where he and his wife Megan Jorgenson run Maine Prairie Studio, a community ceramic art studio and gallery. JD's ceramic work is a reflection of the source material - the true beauty of the clay itself, unglazed and raw, interacting with fire, charcoal and atmosphere in a wood burning kiln.

Guest Artist: Megan Jorgenson
maineprairiestudio.com | @meganraejorgenson
Megan creates functional and sculptural ceramics, with an emphasis on the relationship between surface and form. Her practice is fed by a curiosity about forming and firing methods, as well as the application of two dimensional processes on clay.

5. Jim & Mary Sannerud | Sannerud Studios 306 County Road 48, Grand Marais
sannerudstudios.com | @sannerudstudios
Jim designs and builds custom furniture and mixed media sculpture.

Mary creates artistic and functional felt, from sturdy rugs to lightweight silk and felt scarves, everything is made with an eye to detail and a deep love for the history of felt-making.

6. Rebecca Barrett | The Wilder Woodshop 152 County Road 6, Grand Marais
thewilderwoodshop.com | @thewilderwoodshop
Woman-owned and operated. Rebecca creates chevron cutting boards, north woods inspired cribbage boards, and other functional wood art.

Guest Artist: Jamie Rex
northroadknits.com | @northroadknits
Jamie from North Road Knits is a knitwear designer who creates small batch, hand-made hats, cowls, and more driven by her obsessive need to play with color and fiber.
